Per request by the national local government organizations, the U.S. Access Board has granted an extension on the comment period for proposed Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) facilities compliance guidelines on pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way.
The proposed guidelines will influence the design and reengineering of sidewalks, curbs, crossings, signals and other elements of the local public right-of-way. There is also some concern that the new guidelines would force local governments to update or replace a large percentage of their public facilities, creating an unfunded federal mandate.
A brief overview of the proposed guidelines can be found at http://1.usa.gov/tZ3kOm comments already submitted are available online at http://1.usa.gov/t63zBG.
